Artist Statement
Ana Cristina Giraldo is half Colombian and half Bulgarian, born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand. With her biggest passion being art, she explores how painting transforms the space it is exhibited in and evokes shifting emotions in viewers. Each work invites reflection on colour, material, time, and perception, creating both illusion and physical presence. Painting bridges inner and outer realms, uniting personal experience with external environment through embodied, abstract expression. Giraldo's paintings are intended to collapse the distance between what is felt and what is seen. She believes that making and viewing art is a meditative practice. Due to our fast paced world, it is more important than ever to be in touch with our creativity, we can build up the world one painting at a time.
Giraldo's mark making ranges from expansive to precise, reflecting how different feelings register in the body. Her work draws on the emotional immediacy of expressionist gesture and the sensory interplay between movement, colour, and texture. She is interested in how subtle formal decisions can shift a viewer’s state of mind. Her approach is intuitive yet structured, allowing each piece to start and end organically while resisting habitual repetition. Giraldo is inspired by music of all genres and how it influences the way her paint brush moves. She sees each painting as a visual compass that encourages viewers to connect with parts of themselves that often sit beneath the surface. The work is intended not only to be seen but to be felt, offering a grounded, meditative encounter that fosters clarity, emotional resonance, and a renewed awareness of one’s own internal responses.
